I’ve been to plenty of networking events both online and in person and I talk to lot of entrepreneurs who, like me, had left their corporate jobs to start their own business. Many of us had the experience and felt confident enough to go ahead and start our solopreneur journeys.
At one of the online events, I got partnered up with this gal, I’ll call her Sam. She’s a social media consultant. She started her consulting business about three years ago and said that her business wasn’t failing, but she still wasn’t where she wanted it to be. She felt stuck. She said some months were great, others not so much, and sometimes nothing at all.
While I was talking to her, I checked out her website and I couldn’t tell what she really did at first glance. When I asked her what she did, she answered to the tune of “Well it depends on…”
and BAM
That, right there, was the problem.
She was being Wishy Washy.
Wishy Washy

That was wishy-washy behavior and not knowing how to clearly describe what you do.
Clients don’t hire wishy-washy.
They want to know that you know what you’re doing right off the bat.
When your messaging is all over the place, people will not chase after you to clarify, they will just move on to someone who is clear about their messaging.
Clients like to hire clear, focused and certain.

I struggled with this too, in the beginning. I was shifting titles monthly. I went from, online assistant, to digital assistant, executive assistant, before I finally settled on just Virtual Assistant.
I’m a virtual assistant and I specialize in providing administrative support for solo professionals.
People were more receptive of that title because it was simple and straightforward. Now the only question I usually get is “Do you work by yourself, or do you have an agency?”

Sam didn’t need a new website. She just needed to be clear on what she does and who she’s doing it for. She was trying to be everything for everyone and that was just too complicated for people to process.
The Bottom Line:
So, for those of us who have been in the business for a few years, we need to constantly circle back to our messaging and make sure that we’re being clear. Not every business needs a rebrand, or a new website. We just need to be able to provide a solid answer to one simple question.
“What do you do?”
A Better Plan for Solo Professionals
I’ve created a 2025 Content Calendar tailored specifically for solo professionals like you. Those who don’t have the hours to spend figuring out what to post, but still want to show up online in a meaningful way.
What’s Inside?
- 3 weekly post ideas to keep your content consistent and engaging.
- A mix of educational, promotional, and fun prompts to help you connect with your audience.
- Monthly themes to keep you organized and aligned with your goals.
With this calendar, you’ll stop rolling the dice and guessing what works. Stop leaving your success up to chance. When we know better, we do better.
Chuckle of the day! 😂
“Being wishy-washy in business is like handing out a blank business card.
“Here’s who I kind of am, sort of… maybe.”
