I’ve been thinking about something lately, and I wanted to share it with you.
A while ago I had dinner with some friends. There were four of us and two of us had known each other from work about ten years ago. Simon was that kind of friend that I didn’t have to explain myself to.
We were laughing over stories from way back. At one point, Simon brought up our trip to Yellowstone National Park where we almost got chased by a moose.
We were laughing so loudly at the table and even wiping tears because the story will never not be hilarious to us.
Except for the other two people with us who had no idea what we were talking about.
They smiled and chuckled but you could tell they didn’t get the joke.
They didn’t know the backstory.
Inside Joke

This is exactly what running my virtual assistant business can feel like sometimes…especially because I’ve been running it for a while. In other words, I’ve got history in my business.
I’ve built my systems, showed what I’m offering and even perfected my pitch.
But I never realized that to someone new, it can feel like they’ve walked into the middle of an inside joke.
They see my offer, my website, my social posts and everything else.
But they don’t really get what a virtual assistant does.
They don’t feel the story behind it.
My services made perfect sense to me.
I was using language that was clear to people who already knew me, but to someone new? It probably felt confusing.
So, if things aren’t landing the way they used to in your business, this is probably the reason why.
It’s important to occasionally take time to clean house so that those who don’t know you aren’t confused by what you’re offering.
We don’t want to end up building a business that only makes sense to us.
The Bottom Line:
Let’s stop keeping people out of the story. Never assume that they “get” you. You want to make it easy for them to connect with you and understand you.
A Better Plan for Solo Professionals
I’ve created a 2025 Content Calendar tailored specifically for solo professionals like you. Those who don’t have the hours to spend figuring out what to post, but still want to show up online in a meaningful way.
What’s Inside?
- 3 weekly post ideas to keep your content consistent and engaging.
- A mix of educational, promotional, and fun prompts to help you connect with your audience.
- Monthly themes to keep you organized and aligned with your goals.
With this calendar, you’ll stop rolling the dice and guessing what works. Stop leaving your success up to chance. When we know better, we do better.
Chuckle of the day! 😂
“I treat follow-up emails like free throws…
I mean to make them, but somehow they keep bouncing off.
