Business Acumen, Business Processes, Workflow

Road Tested, Issue #29

Classic cars have always captivated me, not just for their history and craftsmanship, but for their purposeful design. Every part was functional. Nothing more, nothing less. As I admired these timeless vehicles, I realized there’s a profound lesson here for business and that is to keep it simple.

I visited the Classic Car Show in Merrill, WI over the Labor Day weekend. One of the common denominators that I noticed with classic cars was the simplicity of the interior. Though they were filled with character of beautiful chrome and wooden paneling, everything that was on the inside had a specific function. Nothing extra. Just the basics that would allow the car to run safely and get you to your destination.

Even some of the ignition keys were as simple as house keys. Basic, effective, and functional. The cars featured large steering wheels, manual transmissions, and AM radios. Everything had a purpose; nothing was complicated or unnecessary.

All this made me realize how little we need to succeed in our business. The idea is to build a business that will stand the test of time, like a Classic Car. I bet that any one of us can jump in a classic car and drive right off like it was 1934. This may not be true for newer model cars today. We would have to take about thirty minutes to figure out all the bells and whistles before we can take off. But also, the more bells and whistles that a car has, the harder it is to fix and maintain.

If we stick to the things that really drive our business forward, there would be less time for distractions like incorporating unnecessary software and tools that don’t necessarily serve our business the right way, or serves no real purpose. We just want in because it’s supposedly the “next big thing”.

Our businesses can be successful if we keep our model simple. Let’s get back to the basics like relationship marketing and offering exceptional service. Quality over quantity. These are evergreen strategies that have been road tested that will make our businesses stand the test of time. Why do you think car enthusiasts are willing to pay a premium for classic cars? They have proven their value and don’t need to compete to get noticed. They understand what it means to build something timeless.

We don’t need a lot of extra features to succeed. The goal is to keep it basic, but effective. We need to avoid overcomplicating our business with unnecessary tools and processes that add little value.

Cars today are loaded with features that often make things more complicated and harder to maintain. The same goes for our businesses. We need to be careful about chasing the latest trends or tools just because they promise big results. We need to prioritize function over the “next big thing”.

Strategies like relationship marketing and exceptional customer service are proven methods that stand the test of time. These tactics build loyalty, trust, and long-term success with your clients and customers.

Just like a classic car that never goes out of style, a business built on simplicity, quality, and purpose will stand the test of time. We need to get rid of the unnecessary distractions and focus on the basics and strategies that matter most.

Chuckle of the day! 😂
Why do classic cars never get lost?
Because they always drive down memory lane!
