Ah, balance!
It’s funny how we all seem to struggle with it, isn’t it? We know it’s important, but let’s be real, it’s not always easy to achieve.
And that’s okay. We don’t have to pretend that we have it all figured out.

In fact, acknowledging my struggles and imperfections can be more authentic and relatable to my clients. So, instead of striving for a perfect balance, I focus on being true to myself and my brand.
This is a photo I took at Cave Point County Park in Door County, Wisconsin of a rock sculpture I put together. To me, it represents a metaphor for life.
Our health, relationships, careers, family, friendships—each one is like a differently-shaped rock, all of varying weight and importance.

But in some way, these rocks all work together to create a sort of perfect imbalance.
The truth is, it’s impossible to give equal time and attention to every aspect of our lives.
One will always take priority over the others.
So, instead of striving for perfect balance, let’s focus on creating a sense of order and find the support system that works for us.
This is what that looks like for me:
- Vacation Time
I took a trip to Tennessee for my birthday to disconnect and recharge. Read more about it here. Though it wasn’t a big vacation, I made time for it anyway. If I had to choose, my vacation time was represented by the smallest rock in the picture.
- Quality Family Time
Left full-time job due to failing at family time and deteriorating health. Work couldn’t be an excuse anymore. Saw family once every two years. Family is my support system, represented by the largest rock at the right side of the sculpture. I made it my priority to strengthen family relationships. If that rock was not there, everything else would collapse.
- Effective Communication
I communicate my boundaries and availability when it comes to my clients, family and colleagues. This helps to manage expectations and reduces my day to day stress of running a business. That would be the rock at the bottom. The foundation of it all.
While your sculpture may look different from mine, each one is a masterpiece in its own right as we try to awkwardly balance the imperfection.
At the end of the day, our common goal is to achieve an imperfect balance, as perfection is merely a myth. That’s just the reality.
